"LEARN, GROW, AND BE UNIQUE WITH ISB"

JUNE 2024 NEWSLETTER

Dear ISB students, friends and families,

As another exciting and successful school year is coming to the end, I’d like to take a moment to look back and evaluate our journey since the beginning in 2008.

It is with great pleasure and satisfaction to confirm that our commitment to high-quality, balanced, and meaningful education remains unwavering. As time passes, we are confident that our decision 15 years ago to establish a new school in Brno, offering internationally minded and accredited education, was indeed the right one. Our growth has been gradual yet very steady, introducing concepts such as inquiry-based, transdisciplinary learning and student-centered approaches, which were largely unfamiliar in the traditionally oriented educational environment of most public schools.

In promoting our values, we had to engage and convince prospective ISB families, educational institutions, political representatives, and leaders of public and other schools about our vision. This required explaining our mission with passion, dedication, respect, and commitment, to achieve success. The journey has been demanding, yet I must admit, it has been immensely enjoyable!

Here we are, with ISB facilities nearing capacity. The gap in approaches and strategies between the Czech state school system and the progressive, mostly private schools in the region is widening. Increasingly, students and parents are seeking meaningful education and are hesitant to settle for methods that often fail to equip children (our students) with the skills they need for life in the 21st century.

As a culmination of ISB's evolution, we are on the path to becoming an IB continuum school. We firmly believe that incorporating the final component (Middle Years Programme - MYP) of IB education into our program will enhance our school's mission and vision, further emphasizing the values and principles of education we hold dear.

We wish you a successful month of June,

some rain, some sun, and a lot of fun!:)

EARLY YEARS

Celebrating our Community Helpers

Our Early Years students have been inquiring into the roles of community helpers. They visited key community centres and welcomed a range of guest speakers in class, which added to their knowledge. For a part of their summative share, they created and designed their first book which included everything they had learned about their amazing community helpers.

Symmetry Delight

Our young learners had a wide range of fun activities while learning about the concept of symmetry. Using mirrors and classroom objects, they created their own symmetrical designs and giggled with delight over their own creations.

PRIMARY

History Comes to Life

Our PYP students went on a journey through time as they delved into the mysteries of hieroglyphics and ancient structures. Experiencing the thrill of becoming an archeologist, rediscovering age old technology and witnessing evolution through the centuries.

End of Year Trip

The end of year trip is far more than just an enjoyable time with friends. It is a time to become true risk-takers, to build confidence trying new things and to broaden their horizons. Although our students are fully supported by their dedicated teachers, they are given the chance to delve into their independent skills which guide them on their route to becoming open -minded, confident young adults.

SECONDARY

Peer Review

Year 8 English students are becoming skilled communicators.  They have been learning the value of peer revision and editing. By looking over each other’s activism speeches, they get to practice giving feedback on each other’s ideas. This also gives them the chance to reflect on their work, which means they also benefit from giving feedback.

DNA

Year 7s have been learning more about the nucleus through DNA origami. The nucleus is a cell organelle that contains the blueprint of life and is vital to how living things work.  Through these artistic and hands-on learning activities, students consolidate their knowledge and have lots of fun in the process.

HIGH SCHOOL

Group 4 Project

One of the really fun and interesting parts of the Diploma Project is the Group 4 Science Project.  It allows students to see how the Sciences work together to make projects happen in the world.  One group explored how Physics, Chemistry and Biology can come together to see how micro ecosystems can be set up to help the climate, food supply, water filtration and more.

Year 13 Graduation

It is always a bittersweet affair, the Year 13 Graduation ceremony. It is a chance to celebrate the accomplishments and potential of our students but it also means we’re saying goodbye.  This year, we’re sending off a very special group of students who have consistently cared for each other, some of them since primary.
