"LEARN, GROW, AND BE UNIQUE WITH ISB"

OCTOBER 2024 NEWSLETTER

EARLY YEARS

Core Strength and Stamina

Children had lots of fun practising their log rolls. This playful activity helps them build core strength, improve coordination and develop fine motor skills. Log Rolling is a fantastic way for our little ones to stay active while developing their balance skills and body awareness. Risk Taking skills and Knowledge go hand in hand.

Apple Pies

Letter recognition is taught through a variety of activities in Early Years. Children make crafts, use dough, play games and even bake their own apple pies to celebrate their knowledge of the letter A.

PRIMARY

Story-Telling Comes to Life

Libraries are not (just) about books, they are about stories!
The library has recently gained a puppet theatre which is very popular, especially on rainy days. New stories are created and old stories are acted out. Children use books to tell stories or create their own. Interaction between the audience and the puppets is not only appreciated but expected.

Inspiring Reading and Math Skills

Throughout the week, the children record their reading with tally marks for reading books, words and sounding out letters. Every Friday, they check the tally chart and add beads to their necklace based on how many tallies they have acquired. Inquiry through play is at the heart of what we do with our little learners.

SECONDARY

Making inferences

Detectives on the case! Before reading a suspenseful short story, Yeah 8 English literature students make inferences and develop questions based on evidence to see if they can solve the mystery that will be revealed later.

Building Chords on the Piano

Year 9 students have been learning all about how to build and play chords on the piano.  This will allow them to go on to play and even write their own pieces, which is a great way to balance theory and performance in Music class.

HIGH SCHOOL

Analysing Literature Styles from around the World

In their IB DP English Language and Literature class, students have been annotating and analysing the manga, Barefoot Gen, which explores the horror of Hiroshima.  This is in preparation for their final assessments which are coming up very soon.

Testing the Sugar Content of Coke Products

Year 12 Biology students have been conducting sugar analysis on different Coke products to explore carbohydrates.  This has allowed them to enhance their lab report writing skills!

Well-Being at ISB

At ISB, we’re committed to making sure our classrooms are always positive and supportive spaces for students. To help us better understand how students feel both in and out of the classroom, we’ve introduced weekly classroom climate surveys this year. These surveys are designed to give us insight into the social and emotional environment, so we can step in and provide support if a student needs it.

Each division has its own tailored survey to make sure we’re addressing the unique needs of all our students. Additionally, we’ve introduced parent concern forms and encourage families to reach out to ISB Wellbeing Coordinators anytime they feel communication is needed. We're here to listen and help!

What’s Next

  • Music Workshop with Argentinian Musicians

  • Visit to Mendel Museum

  • Duke of Edinburgh Training Journey

  • Attending a conference with Jane Goodall

As a special addition to this section, we are highlighting a CAS project that 3 of our Year 13 students are putting in Prague.  They have planned a Wine and Win event that is expected to raise a substantial amount of money for some Czech charities.  Details below.
